Workaround: Creating Linked Contact Cards Using UTM Codes Across Surveys

In certain Ripple configurations, contact information entered in one survey does not automatically populate in a subsequent survey unless a workaround is applied. If you're trying to connect a parent and child participant and need the contact information to generate a contact card in the child profile, this workaround using UTM codes can help.

By linking surveys using UTM codes and contact card field mappings, you can pass data from one participant to another (e.g., from a parent to a child). This process works even when the two participants are enrolled in different studies.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create the First Participant (Parent)

  • Go to the the study.
  • Create a new participant.

2. Launch the First Survey

  • On the participant’s profile card, click "Survey this participant."

  • Choose the corresponding survey.

  • Fill in the survey details.

Important: Any pre-existing data may prefill, except contact information. Be sure to enter contact info manually (e.g., phone number, email address).

3. Trigger the Second Survey via UTM Link

  • At the bottom of the first survey, locate the hyperlink directing to the second survey.

  • Click the hyperlink, which opens a survey in the study (child).

4. Verify Prefilled Information

  • On the second survey page, you’ll see that the contact information (e.g., phone number) from the first survey is prefilled.

  • Complete and save the second survey.

5. Confirm Contact Card Creation

  • Open the child participant's profile card in the child study.

  • Verify that a Contact Card has been created using the prefilled information.

6. Complete the First Survey

  • Return to the original tab containing the first (parent) survey.

  • Complete and submit it.

Key Notes

  • This workaround only functions if the contact fields in both surveys are mapped to Contact Card fields in Ripple.

  • This process enables the automatic generation of a Contact Card in the child’s profile based on information entered in the parent’s survey.

  • UTM parameters serve as a mechanism to pass field data between surveys across different studies.

Use Cases

  • Linking parent and child participants in pediatric studies.

  • Automatically generating related contact records across family participants.

  • Managing multi-participant enrollment workflows with shared contact information.

Limitations

  • Contact information must be entered manually in the first survey to initiate this process.

  • The survey hyperlink must correctly pass UTM parameters.

  • The second survey must be configured to pull from UTM and write to contact card fields.
